Consulting/Coaching

If your child wants to attend university in the US or come to China to study, we can help.  We can also provide TOEFL/IELTS assistance as well.  We know how to get your child enrolled in an American university and know all the ins and outs of the application process.  Also we have access to several Chinese universities that offer full scholarships to foreign students.

English Classes Available

We offer online English class as well.  Classes are 25-30 minutes and focus on speaking, reading, listening and writing.  Our lessons are geared toward a long term approach.  We do not teach students who want to pass an exam or just learn more words and phrases.  We teach our kids to understand the English language down to it's core.  We prefer to start with children 4-6 years old, but can work with the right older student.  We have very high expectations and your child will need to try out for our class.  The vast majority of students do not get accepted.  If your child is accepted they must follow our rules.  Parents or students who break our rules will immediately be dropped from enrollment and the remaining paid tuition will be refunded.  No exceptions.

International Summer Camp at Jim Thorpe

Two Week Summer Camp in Lovely Pennsylvania

WIth everything opening up we plan on starting our first summer camp in 2024!  This means that your child will be able to register now.

We plan on hosting around 3-5 kids in our home in Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania, USA.  All sessions are about 2 weeks long.  Your child will have the opportunity to travel all around the Northeastern part of the USA, as well as have daily classes and use their English in a real-world environment.

Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania, USA

Jim Thorpe is located in Pennsylvania about 120 miles east of New York City and 95 miles north of Philadelphia in the Pocono Mountains.

There are beautiful waterfalls all throughout the Pocono Mountains, as well as a large number of wildlife - including deer, turkeys and black bears.

We will only admit our current students into our summer camp!  Soon we will post a registration page with prices and more information.

How much money can you expect to earn as a teacher in China?

This is the big question, right?  You aren't flying halfway around the world to work for free.  The average native English speaking teacher in China can expect to make around 25,000 to 30,000 yuan per month.

Extra benefits and bonuses available

Nearly everything is negotiable in your contract with the school.  Here are the basics that everyone should get regardless of the school or salary:
  • Free apartment - usually a studio or 1-bedroom, small living area, bathroom and very tiny kitchen.  Click here for a tour of one of my old apartments in Yinchuan.
  • Flight reimbursement - this ranges from 3000-10000 yuan.  Almost every school will have you pay for your flight upfront and reimburse you usually after your probationary period (1-3 months).  Also, they should pay for your return flight back home.
  • Visa processing - as long as you have a valid passport with a couple years on it, the school should take care of all costs involved in processing the visa and work permit.  NEVER PAY AN AGENT OR SCHOOL ANYTHING!  This means they are a fraud.
  • Medical Insurance - Your school must provide social security, this includes retirement and medical insurance.  When you leave China, it is cashed out.
  • Bonus - You should get at least 1 bonus per completed contract year.  Some schools do these monthly or quarterly, but do not sign a contract that doesn't give you a bonus of at least 5000 to equal to 1 month's salary om total.  We strongly suggest having it called a contract completion bonus, instead of a performance bonus.  This way, if you finish your contract you get it regardless of your performance.  If you have it as a performance bonus - many schools will use every excuse in the book to pay you a much lower bonus or nothing at all.  Many larger schools are no longer offering bonuses (Dec 2022).
Other benefits that can be added into your contract:
  • Tuition for your dependents.  If you have children, you can have the school include their tuition in your contract, or at least a good portion of it.
  • Vacation/Time - Per Chinese law you will be given the national Chinese holidays off.  However, more and more Chinese schools are reducing summer vacation for foreigners or removing it altogether, in order to get as much work out of them as possible.  Even many international schools with summer vacation are now having their foreign teachers work during the summer, either recruiting or teaching extra classes.  If you work for a kindergarten or training school, you will not get any time off during the summers.  In order to avoid a huge issue - make sure you mention this when you are negotiating your contract.  Even if you work at a kindergarten or training school you should ask for 2-3 weeks of time off.  You can see if they will give it to you at full or half pay.  It doesn't hurt to ask.
  • Meals - I work for a kindergarten and they provide 3 meals a day.  These are included in my contract.  If your school provides meals to the students, then you should be able to eat for free or at least at a reduced cost.
  • Taxes - Yes, you need to pay Chinese taxes.  However these are very low.  You can ask your school to include these in your contract.  So your contract salary is net income not gross.

Tier 1

These are Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Guangzhou - you will find more Western stores, restaurants and other amenities here.  As well as more foreigners.  The cost of living is much higher here than other cities.  We now live in Shenzhen as of December 2021.

Tier 2

Chengdu, Hangzhou, Wuhan and Xian - these are some nice cities, but still are very large and can be expensive.  Chengdu is the home of the pandas. These would be our second choice for first time teachers coming to China.

Tier 3

Yinchuan, Hohhot, Weifang and Anshan.  As we said above, the cost of living in these cities are much lower, and give you the chance to save more money.  You won't miss out on the fun and opportunities as well.  These also have the best potential for growth in the future.  We were located in Yinchuan.  Air quality is usually much better in tier 3 cities.

How to become an English teacher in China

Update! - It is very difficult for teachers to get into China due to the virus restrictions.  If you are outside of China now but want to come in and become a teacher, I highly recommend waiting until they lift the restrictions.  If you are in China now and need help finding a teaching job, please contact us.
This may seem like an overwhelming thing, but we are here to help you.  We will walk you through the entire process step by step.
First you must meet the basic requirements per Chinese law - these are:
  •     Must be from the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand or South Africa (No exceptions)
  •     Must hold a bachelor's degree or higher
  •     2 years of teaching experience is preferred - this can training, coaching or regular classroom teaching experience
  •     Valid passport
  •     Clean criminal background check
  •     Ability to pass a full physical examination
  •     TEFL/TESOL preferred
If you meet the basic requirements we can move to the next step.  We will need your resume/CV an a 30 second introduction video.  Please speak clearly and slowly in the video - give your name, home country and why you would like to teach in China.  Once we have these, we can speak with our schools and try to match you to the best one.  If a school would like to speak with you, we will setup a video interview between you and the school.  We strongly suggest install WeChat on your phone.  This will make the entire process much easier, as people in China cannot access Facebook messenger, etc.  Once you have WeChat installed, we can connect you with the school.  Usually most interviews last about 15-20 minutes.  Just relax and you will be fine.  If the school likes you they may offer you a contract within 24 hours.  If this happens, we can give you tips on negotiating for various benefits. You will have 48 hours to decided whether you want the position or not.  After that the contract is pulled.  If you sign, the school will give you more information and request various documents from you - your authenticated diploma, copy of your passport and other documentation.  Once you have sent these to the school, they will apply for your 'Z' visa.  This is the only visa that allows you to work in China legally.  Normally it takes up to 6 weeks for your visa to process.  The Chinese government will send a letter to the school, who will then send it to you.  You will need to take this letter and your passport to your local Chinese embassy or consulate and apply for your visa.  Once they issue your visa, you are able to come to China.  Start to finish this entire process takes 6-8 weeks.  We of course will help you with any questions you may have.

Non-Native English speakers.  You cannot legally teach English in China.  You can check my blog for more information.  Please do not contact me and tell me about a friend that you know that is teaching here.  I believe they are here teaching English.  But they are doing so illegally.  Whether they know it or not.  I cannot help you get hired here as a non-native.

Your contract with the school

Congratulations!  You have been offered a contract with a school in China.   Now what?  This part can be very complicated.  Especially if you don't know how Chinese contracts and business is done.  Don't worry, we are here to help you.  Here are some things you need to consider and think about in regards to your contract:
  • Length of Contract - most contacts are for 12 months.  If the school likes you they may offer you 24 months.  However, you will need to renew your visa after 12 months.  This is fairly simple - the school will resubmit all of your paperwork, passport and a copy of your new physical exam about 6 weeks prior to your residence permit expiring.
  • Your Salary -  Chinese schools pay once a month.  Make sure it is clearly stated how you will be paid.  Some schools will pay you with cash or deposit your salary into your Chinese bank account.
  • Holidays and Leave - depending on the school you may get summer holidays off.  Generally this is only for public schools - elementary to university level.  Private schools such as Training Centers and Kindergartens do not offer summer vacation.  Meaning you will only receive the standard national Chinese holidays off.  If you want additional holiday/vacation time, you will need to negotiate this with the school prior to signing your contract.  Make sure it is put into your contract.  It shouldn't be a problem to have a couple weeks added to your contract - even at half or full pay.  This is all part of the negotiation.
  • Apartment - Free apartment or apartment stipend are available.  We never recommend the stipend for new teachers.  These are usually offered in larger tier 1 and 2 cities because of the high cost of rent.  The stipends do not cover the entire monthly cost of your apartment, so you will pay the difference out of pocket.  This can be anywhere up to 10,000 yuan a month or more.  This can be anywhere from 2-6 months rent in advance, plus other deposits.  All out of your pocket.  In the smaller cities apartments are always offered for free in the contract.  Just make sure you give them a list of everything you need in your apartment prior to signing your contract.

How to apply

I strong encourage you to visit my YouTube Channel.  There is a lot of information on there that can help you.  If you want to apply, I will need your resume/CV and a 30 second introduction video.  Please speak slowly and clearly in the video.  Send both to me at   dennis@chinaconsultinggroup.com
